Working as a Graduate Student (not GTAs)

Since the late 1990s there has been a guiding principle at Trent stating that full-time graduate students are not to work more than 10 hours per week on campus, the number of hours per week of a GTA position. If a student was looking to work additional hours on campus, they required permission from their supervisor and department. As of May 2023, this restriction no longer applies. Graduate students are now permitted to work more than 10 hours but less than full-time hours (35 hours per week) on campus and maintain their full-time status*. Should a student work full-time hours or more on campus, they will be required to drop down to part-time status. If you have anu questions pertaining to working on campus as a graduate student, please contact [email protected].

The School of Graduate Studies does not monitor the employment of graduate students off-campus.

*Note: If you are a receipt of a Tri-Council Agency award (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) it is recommended that you contact Jane Rennie to determine if you are allowed to work more than 10 hours on campus per week in accordance with the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide.
