PLEASE NOTE: All seminars begin at 7pm
We are pleased to announce the commencement of the seventh year of the Thomas H.B. Symons Seminar Series. This event is intended as a forum for graduate students at Trent University to share their research at a level understandable by the entire academic community and the public.
The series is named in honour of the founding president of Trent, Professor Thomas H.B. Symons. Professor Symons is an obvious choice to represent this series because of his dedication to higher education and student development, as well as his keen interest in graduate students and their research aspirations. The growing number of graduate students enrolled at Trent University encompasses an array of programs across the humanities and social and natural sciences. This seminar series is a unique opportunity for graduate students from across disciplines to come together and share research and ideas.
Seven monthly events are held in the evenings at Catharine Parr Traill College. Two student speakers (one from each of the arts and humanities and the sciences) give twenty-minute presentations on their research. Questions and discussion follow each speaker, as well as an intermission for refreshments and socializing. Abstracts are solicited twice during the academic year, in September and January. Each selected speaker is awarded a Symons Seminar Series certificate and a stipend. A panel comprising student leaders selects one of the speakers, based on their research and ability to communicate to a broader audience, as the Symons Gala Student Lecturer. This student is invited to present their lecture at the Symons Seminar Series Gala held in April and receives the Symons Award of Excellence.
On behalf of the Symons Seminar Series committee and the Graduate Students’ Association, I would like to invite you all to attend the seminar series.
