You are invited to start your 2012-13 academic year with TIP Camp on September 2-5 — a four day, three night orientation session hosted by Trent International Program (TIP) at Camp Timberlane. Timberlane is a truly beautiful residential camp located just north of Haliburton, Ontario in the heart of the Canadian outdoors.

TIP knows that international students face unique transitions when
coming to Canada and beginning or continuing a Canadian education. At TIP Camp you will be provided with the resources and information you need to gather your thoughts, express your concerns, and ask questions.

Here are just a few of the orientation highlights:
• Learn about Canadian culture.
• Understand Immigration & Legalities in Canada.
• Get to know Peterborough and what it has to offer.
• Meet and get to know TIP Staff, Faculty and Administration.
• Meet students studying at all levels and in all programs.
• You will be provided with time and space to meet and discuss
your individual agenda with your Faculty Advisor.
• You will meet our Camp Assistants, who are students themselves,
and become a member of the TIP family.

This past September, the TCSA took over the administration of Transit at Trent University from the Office of Student Affairs. Improvements were made immediately, such as the Transit Pass extension through the summer, but we want to make more, and we need your help! This is your opportunity to let us know how to improve the transportation service to meet the needs of Trent Students. This Competition encourages all members of the Trent community to apply their knowledge of workplace health and safety by identifying a health or safety hazard at Trent and proposing a means of controlling that hazard to improve health and safety at Trent.

Trent community members are invited to submit entries in one or more of three categories:

• Lab safety;
• Office safety;
• General safety

Each submission should:

• Identify a safety concern that exists on Trent property ie. Symons, Traill, Oshawa, Oliver and Windy Pines.
• Assess the safety risk to individuals by determining:
  • What workplace illness or injury could be caused by the hazard;
  • How likely it is to cause illness or injury;
  • The potential impact to individuals and the university in a worse case scenario.
• Propose measures to neutralize or control the risk.
• Explain how we can determine if the control measures worked and are continuing to work.
• Include a signature block with the contact information and signatures of the competitor(s) and a manager (it does not have to be the competitor’s manager), or any Trent official for students, if they support the submission. If submitting electronically please have the Manager/Trent official send an email in support of the submission.  Managerial support does not imply a commitment to fund the proposal. It is solely an indication that the manager supports the proposed risk control plan and is willing to assist in its implementation, if implementation is approved.

Entries may be submitted by individuals or by teams by February 15th, 2012. There is no limit on the number of entries an individual or team may submit. Entries are to be submitted to the Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Bill Gibson, ext 7373. Entries may be submitted electronically to bgibson@trentu.ca or in hard copy to Room 110.1, Blackburn Hall. If Bill is not in his office, they can be dropped off at the Parking Office, Blackburn Hall room 103, during business hours.

When you think of the North, what comes to mind? Perhaps you picture a polar bear roaming the sea ice or seemingly endless herds of caribou follow ancient migratory pathways on the open tundra.  Perhaps peoples of the North and their close relationship with their environment or their assertions of sovereignty over Northern lands come to mind, or the complex political, economic and environmental issues that have routinely made headlines in recent years, such as resource development conflicts or climate change.  Whatever your interest in  the North, you are invited to come learn, share, and discuss Northern history, ecology, politics, and culture at the Trent Northern Studies Colloquium (NSC) on February 2^nd, 2012.

The Trent Northern Studies Colloquium is a one-day event run by students for students, with an emphasis on bringing together students from both the Arts and Sciences to share their knowledge of the North.  Trent has a large contingent of undergraduate and graduate students involved in Northern research, and the NSC will feature presentations and posters on a variety of Northern issues.  Some presentations will describe the relationships bird and mammal species have with each other, their habitat, and the Northern people who depend on them.  Other presentations will explore the importance of Indigenous Knowledge and community-based monitoring in understanding species ecology, informing Northern policy, and ensuring the health of Northerners. There is something to interest everyone at this year’s NSC!

The NSC is an interdisciplinary event, where students, researchers, and professors from all faculties can meet, mingle, and share.  Diverse presentations will run in groups of three or four throughout the day, linked by a common theme: Meeting Needs, (Re)Claiming, Flourishing, and Overlapping Spaces. Each session will be followed by the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discourse with the presenters. This year’s daytime event will take place in the Gathering Space on the first floor of Gzowski College, and runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with light refreshments throughout the day.  Registration is not required, and you are free to enter and leave the Gathering Space at your leisure.

In the evening, Udloriak Hanson will be presenting a keynote address. Ms. Hanson speaks nationally and internationally to offer audiences an insight into the realities and concerns of Inuit peoples in Canada. Ms. Hanson is an Inuit advisor working with the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, which is the national organization that represents Inuit peoples living in Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, and the Inuvialuit region of the Northwest Territories. She is an expert with a distinguished track record negotiating land claims and the devolution of powers from the federal government to Nunavut. Ms. Hanson is also involved in representing Inuit views on Arctic governance, including working with those involved in the Arctic Council. Most recently, Ms. Hanson has co-chaired the Munk-Gordon Arctic Security Program, which works to improve public policy in the circumpolar Arctic. The evening event, including the keynote address and a student poster session, will be held at the Peterborough Public Library on Aylmer Street.  The poster session will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by Ms. Hanson’s keynote address beginning at 7:15 pm, and the event will conclude with refreshments at 8:30 pm.  The organizing committee and participants in the Northern Studies Colloquium hope to see you on February 2^nd for a day of learning and sharing about the North! b) MyBeat: MyBeat provides alerts on everything from campus wide class cancellations to campus safety notices

Trent students and members of the community are encouraged to register for this valuable public safety tool to receive text messages or e-mails pertaining to crime and security notices provided by Trent University Risk Management department or the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police. The messages will be brief and may refer participants to other media for further information.

Anyone who resides, operates a business, is employed or visits in the City of Peterborough or the Village of Lakefield can register online at www.peterboroughpolice.com via the “MyBeat” button.

Types of alert messages that users may choose to receive by way of cellular phone and / or e-mail addresses are:
Trent University Alerts: means information pertaining to Trent University safety and emergencies.
Community Alerts: information such as road closures, power outages, and general interest items.
Crime Alerts: information relating to more serious crimes and crimes in progress.
Emergency Alerts: information relating to natural disasters and major incidents of public safety concern.
Fleming College Alerts: information pertaining to Fleming College safety and emergencies.
Neighbourhood Alerts: crime prevention information relating to the location that you reside or work.
School Alerts: information pertaining to School safety and emergencies.

The intention of the MyBeat program is to keep citizens informed of important events occurring that will heighten community awareness while carrying out daily activities, resulting in improved public safety. The program does not permit users to send a reply to alerts received. If you have information to provide to the police as a result of an alert please respond to the non-emergency police phone number (705) 876-1122 or in the case of an emergency call 911.

Cellphone providers may charge carriers for individual text messages, but there is no cost to join.
